One airman dead, another injured after shooting incident at Kirtland Air Force Base

One airman is dead and another is injured with a gunshot wound following a “shooting incident” involving security forces at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico early Saturday.

Security forces assigned to the 377th Security Forces Squadron at Kirtland Air Force Base responded to “an incident” at around 2 a.m. Saturday, which led to the shooting, the base said in a statement.

The injured airman was shot in the hand and transported to the University of New Mexico Center for treatment, the base said. He has since been released.

The other airman was found dead at the scene, KAFB said.

“The cause of death and the incident remains under investigation by local authorities,” the base said in the release.

In an update on Facebook, the base said “officials are investigating an incident that occurred early this morning near Kirtland Air Force Base,” though it was not immediately clear which officials are leading the investigation or where exactly it occurred.

The base said there is no threat to the public or to base personnel at this time, and that the Truman Gate and the Truman Visitor Center are closed until further notice.

No other details were released by the base regarding the incident.
