BTS rumoured to feature on Michael Jackson tribute album, and MJ fans are calling it a ‘disrespect’: ‘No, thank you’

South Korean boy band BTS’ comeback is inarguably one of the most anticipated events in global pop culture. The septet is set to release a new album in spring 2026 and is currently in Los Angeles working on the upcoming project. While the members have remained tight-lipped about their professional plans, they’ve kept fans engaged with glimpses into their personal lives. Now, fresh rumours suggest that BTS has recorded vocals for unreleased Michael Jackson tracks as part of a forthcoming tribute album.

For long-time fans of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, the news isn’t all that surprising, especially since Jungkook has frequently cited the late pop icon as a major influence. However, those unfamiliar with BTS’ global impact and musical legacy have voiced scepticism, questioning whether a Korean boy band should be involved in preserving Michael Jackson’s heritage. This has now ignited a heated debate on X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. Scroll ahead to find out more.

Michael Jackson’s upcoming tribute album and BTS’ involvement

According to MJ VIBE, a well-respected Michael Jackson fan community, Michael Jackson spent five months living at Grouse Lodge in Ireland back in 2006, working on music with top-tier producers and artists alongside his family. Although those sessions were never completed before his passing in 2009, the recordings were safely preserved, and now, studio owner Paddy Dunning is leading a new effort to bring Jackson’s unfinished vision to life.

After a recent trip to the U.S., Dunning revealed that several major global artists are now involved in the project. “The sessions started last year, and we’ve already had the Korean boy band BTS over at Grouse Lodge recording one of the songs,” he told The Irish Sun. “There are about ten more tracks written specifically for Michael by his collaborators here in Ireland, including producer Rodney Jerkins and rapper Nephew, both of whom are fully on board.”

While there’s no official confirmation yet, sources say BTS has already wrapped up their recording session, news that has sent ARMYs into overdrive. However, fans of Michael Jackson are not really impressed.

BTS and Michael Jackson collab: Why is the internet divided?

Over on Michael Jackson’s fan subreddit, reactions to the rumoured BTS collaboration have been mixed, with many fans of the late pop icon expressing scepticism and frustration.

One user strongly criticised the decision, writing, “It pisses me off that the estate continues to disrespect MJ and the fan community this way. This isn’t the first time they’ve lent unreleased/unheard music to other artists. I don’t care who the artist is, how big of a fan they are, etc. The estate hasn’t released ‘new’ music in over a decade. This is all a big middle finger to us all and to MJ, as if he’s not good enough to release his own versions of these songs. Piss on Branca.”

Another echoed the sentiment, saying, “They can keep it and just give us the Michael Jackson version only, and plus, I want more footage of him anyway!” A third chimed in, “Don’t want it. Their company likes to hop on things that would make them the most money. If it’s an unreleased song, I’d rather hear Michael sing it.”

Some reactions were more direct and critical of BTS themselves. One user commented, “Sorry, but no. K-pop sucks, and it’s just a culture-vulture artificial genre. Sucks.” Another added, “These should either remain unreleased or be released with only MJ’s vocals. How much I like BTS & Justin Timberlake (equally, btw), imo the original versions should’ve been the only ones released.”

Still, not all fans were opposed to the idea. Several users voiced their support for the rumoured project, suggesting that Michael Jackson would have appreciated BTS and their global impact.

“I’m a big fan of both, so this is actually enticing news for me. Plus, I know how much BTS genuinely loves and admires MJ, and their work ethic seems to be unmatched compared to most mainstream US pop artists who are, at this point, lacklustre and famous more for their looks than talent or performances,” one user shared.
