A bear briefly chased the mascot for pro hockey’s Seattle Kraken in a furry faceoff before the grizzly goon let the sea troll skate away unharmed.
Buoy, official costumed cheerleader of the NHL’s relatively new franchise in Seattle, and Kraken forward John Hayden were spreading their team’s good will in Alaska and doing some fishing in Katmai National Park.
That’s when the ferocious mammal appeared to go on the attack, forcing Buoy, Hayden and their line mates to clear the zone.
“While we were fishing we got a couple close calls with a couple of bears,” Hayden said.
The growling bear took several aggressive steps toward Buoy, but then dumped the chase.
Hayden joked that the animal just wanted a closer look at Buoy, who was dressed in his normal game-time costume along with fisherman coveralls.
“I want to blame it on Buoy. They were pretty interested in his whole look,” said Hayden. “We got out of it OK, but it was a close call.”
